The New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) is piloting a teacher career pathway program in more than 76 high-need middle schools that struggle to recruit and retain effective teachers. Through the career pathway, NYCDOE will diversify roles in the teaching force, formalize peer support structures, increase classroom leadership capacity through professional learning opportunities for teachers, and provide new opportunities for teachers to advance their careers. The career pathway is designed to improve NYCDOE’s ability to attract, retain, develop, and recognize its most talented teachers by creating incentives to work in high-need schools. NYCDOE’s project structure aligns with New York State Education Law §3012-c (or 3012-c), signed into law in March 2012, which stipulates more rigorous requirements and procedures to evaluate teacher and principal effectiveness.
