Breakthrough Charter Schools is a nonprofit organization located in Cleveland, Ohio, that has consistently prepared its students for high school, college, and life. Breakthrough is partnering with two nonprofit organizations (Friends of Breakthrough Schools and The New Teacher Project) and seven charter schools. It has expanded on Ohio’s educator evaluation models to help improve the network’s human capital management strategies and maintain and refine the quality of instruction in each of the seven participating schools. By working collaboratively with the state and community partners, Breakthrough Charter Schools currently serves seven high-need schools and approximately 3,000 students, growing to about 5,000 students by the end of the five-year grant period. Eighty-five percent of students’ are low income, and 97 percent are minority; they have historically outperformed their peers in the state on the end-of-grade/end-of-course assessments.
